Practical Guide: OAK

Operational details specific to Oakland International Airport.

When to Arrive

Both KaiserAir and Signature run 24/7 at OAK's North Field, so there is no after-hours gap. The bigger arrival-timing risk is navigation: chauffeurs who type "OAK" into GPS without the FBO street address end up at the commercial terminal on the wrong side of the airport. Our drivers route in by exiting I-880 at Hegenberger Road West, going about 2 miles, turning right on Doolittle Drive past the Hilton, left at the first stoplight onto Swan Way, and right onto Earhart Road — KaiserAir at 8735 and Signature at 8433. We stage 15 to 20 minutes before block-in at the correct FBO and confirm the operator with the passenger before dispatch.

Best Vehicle for OAK Service

OAK's South Field 10,520-foot runway handles the full large-cabin Gulfstream fleet up to VIP airliners, and KaiserAir's ramp is sized to accommodate aircraft up to a 747. For one or two executives off a midsize jet, the Cadillac Escalade is the default. Three to four passengers with overnight bags off a large-cabin Gulfstream route to the Chevy Suburban Premier. The Mercedes Sprinter earns its place on Napa Valley runs — full crew movements, family groups, and wine-country weekends where cases and golf bags need to stay together in one vehicle rather than being split across two sedans.

Common Destinations from This Airport

Three runs anchor OAK. Downtown Oakland at 10 miles and 15 to 20 minutes is the shortest, typically a single Escalade for a corporate or hotel transfer. Downtown San Francisco at 18 miles and 25 to 40 minutes is the Bay Bridge crossing — usually an Escalade or Suburban depending on luggage, with timing dictated by bridge traffic. Napa Valley at 51 miles and 55 to 90 minutes is the signature OAK trip, where lower landing fees draw the wine-country charters and the Sprinter handles wedding parties or winery weekends in one move. Silicon Valley at 28 miles and 35 to 50 minutes is the cross-bay alternative when SFO is congested.

Traffic by Hour

OAK's choke point is the Bay Bridge into San Francisco. Mornings 7 to 9 AM and evenings 4 to 7 PM stretch the SF run well beyond the off-peak 25 to 40 minutes — we pad heavily during those windows. I-880 north toward Berkeley and south toward San Jose also fills up during the same hours, which extends Silicon Valley transfers. The Napa run on I-80 north is generally clear except for Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons in summer, when wine-country traffic compounds with commuter flow. Downtown Oakland stays close to off-peak times in both directions because it is a short surface-street pull from North Field.

On-Site Experience at KaiserAir

Both FBOs sit at North Field on Earhart Road, separate from the commercial passenger terminal — chauffeurs drive directly to the FBO buildings without commercial congestion. KaiserAir at Gate N operates a private passenger terminal with concierge, conference and quiet rooms, a crew lounge with showers, flight planning and weather station, complimentary espresso and refreshments, Wi-Fi and satellite TV, valet parking, a shuttle van and courtesy crew car, a 48,000 sq ft hangar, and an 861,724 sq ft ramp. KaiserAir explicitly coordinates limousine service. Signature OAK two doors down provides a full-service executive terminal, customs and immigration, and courtesy transportation.
